There should be no controversy in demanding ST status for Meiteis/Meeteis: STDCM

In a public discourse held today on inclusion of Meiteis/Meeteis in the Scheduled Tribe list under the Constitution of India, vice president of Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur, Dhiraj Yumnam said that there is no need of creating controversy in claiming ST status.
The discourse was held at Tera Moirang Hanuba today organised by Tera Moirang Hanuba Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur and Tera Moirang Hanuba Youth Club Development Committee (MHYCDC).
Dhiraj noted that enlistment of Meitei/Meetei in the ST list is not a tough assignment for the government as ST list is already an established provision in the constitution of India and also no new legislation is required.

There is no need of creating controversy in claiming ST status because Meiteis/Meeteis are already an indigenous community, cited the vice president of STDCM.
“It is disheartening that some individuals, organisations in the state itself opposing the genuine demand of the committee. We termed them as anti-Meitei/Meetei and will fight this component to achieve the status,” he added.
A strong and a collective movement of the supporters are needed for fighting the opposition and will fight tooth and nail, he urged the gathering during the discourse.
The public discourse was also attended by convener of STDCM, L. Romesh; secretary incharge; K. Bhogendrajit; president of Moirang Hanuba Nupi Chaokhat Khongthang Lamjing Lup; L. Kadam Devi and member S. Shantibala Devi as presidium members.
The committee had earlier decided to ban railway construction works under the condition if government fails to hear their demand by September 16, but called off the agitation after reaching an agreement with the chief minister yesterday.
